“Hey Holly, My wife just recently found out she was pregnant. She actually knew before we bought the test kit because she has been experiencing really bad heart burn / indigestion. It wakes her up several times a night. Can you provide some advice on how we can tame her stomach a bit?”
Most women suffer from heartburn at some point during pregnancy. Here are some things you can do naturally to alleviate it.
- Drink water more frequently throughout the day instead of a lot at one sitting, and don’t drink any while eating
- Chew your food until it’s liquid
- Drink marshmallow root tea (herbal infusion)
- Drink ginger tea
- Eat Papaya and Pineapple- both are loaded with digestive enzymes and if eaten between meals or before a meal, they both helps to keep heartburn at bay. This one is my personal favorite!
Also, stay upright – don’t lay down right after you eat a meal. When you do lay down, it’s best to lay on your left side to help with digestion and prop yourself up with pillows so you are not flat.
Thanks!
A seasoned mama friend recommended I try Orbit gum (wintermint) – it worked like a charm.
Thanks so much for the tip! I’ve never heard of the gum chewing approach, but I would try substituting for a brand that doesn’t have artificial sweetener, such as Spry Gum. It’s sweetened with Xylitol and comes in Spearmint, Peppermint and Cinnamon.
