Ask Holly: What Is the Best Baby Carrier?

Hi Holly,
My niece is having her first baby, mine is now 16 years old!!! so its been a while, but I am looking for a great baby wrap, carrier for her, do you have any recommendations?

Hi-
I’m glad you asked. I love baby wearing and have tried almost every kind of sling/wrap/carrier there is. (Except for the forward facing type, which is not recommended.)

If your niece will mostly be carrying the baby during the infant stage, I recommend the Moby Wrap. It is versatile and the baby feels secure and snuggled, while not restricting her airways or unnaturally forcing her legs into an uncomfortable position. I used the Moby from birth until 8 months with my son.

I also recommend the Ergo Baby Carrier. I carried my son in it until he was over 2 years old and more than 30 pounds. It is very user friendly and can be worn on the front or back.

Congratulations on your soon to be grand-niece!

I Love My Wrap!

Have you heard the story about the man who lost his wallet and loved it so much more when he found it than he had before?  I had a similar experience last week which reminded me that I need to share my love of the Moby wrap with you.  I was starting to feel like maybe I shouldn’t carry my 23 pound 7 month old so much and transition him to the stroller.  (Why I was feeling this way, I don’t know- sometimes crazy thoughts creep into my head)  Of course I know that babywearing is ideal, especially for the first 9 months!  Anyway, I was readying to leave my apartment, feeling apathetic towards my wrap, which mysteriously I couldn’t find.  I then realized I had left it on our roof terrace the night before, which threw me into a panicky whirlwind of running up to the roof searching for it, then down to the doorman to ask them if anyone had turned it in, to then finally finding the porter who cleans the terrace every morning.  He said, “That was yours?  It’s in the garbage!”  He quickly went to the trash room, tore open the bag, and saved my beer soaked Moby from an early demise.  I was SO relieved.  I couldn’t use it on that outing, and my baby and I missed it the whole time.  I couldn’t wait to get home to wash it (a few times!) and use it again later that afternoon.  Aaah.  Our favorite mode of transport, babywearing.  What was I thinking?  I guess I needed this wake-up call!
