Another Reason to Go Organic

Eat organically grown food for the health of your baby!  Here is an article about the presence of hazardous chemicals, including pesticides, present in umbilical cord blood.  The low level of exposure to toxins in utero is linked to birth defects, developmental disorders and chronic diseases.  Join a CSA, shop the farmer’s market, and vote with your dollar by buying organic food.

Good Enough For Baby?

Every time I put anything in my mouth, my 13 month old wants a bite or a sip.  I always try to give him one because I don’t want him to differentiate between what I eat and what I feed him, and I plan on having a “no kid food” policy in our home.  However many times I catch myself withholding something from him because I don’t want him eating or drinking it.  Examples- white flour products, sugary scones, iced decaf coffee, red wine, chips- you get the picture.  I have to ask myself why I will put something in my body that I won’t give my child.  I’m challenging myself this week to only consume things that I will let him try (and I’ll save the wine for after he goes to bed!).  I don’t want to squelch his curiosity and excitement for new foods, and I will radically clean up my diet at the same time.  After all, Continue reading Good Enough For Baby?

“Julie and Julia” Bring Back Butter

Yes, I might have been one of the last to see Julie and Julia, but thanks to Baby Day at the movies, I finally saw it!  One major thing resonated with me…Julia Child used about a stick of butter on everything she made, ate lots and lots of fabulously rich food for every meal, and both she and her husband lived to be over 90!  This movie has created a major revival of Child’s Mastering The Art of French Cooking sales, but people everywhere are freaking out over the fat content in her recipes.  Don’t!  We can learn a very important lesson from Julia: Continue reading “Julie and Julia” Bring Back Butter

Is It Really Organic?

Wow- I just read an artical in the Washington Post which said the USDA has decided to allow non organic ingredients in products bearing the organic seal. Of utmost concern to me is the allowing of synthetic additives in organic baby formula! This is one more reason to feed our children fresh, whole foods (starting with breastmilk!) that don’t come from a package. If there is no “label” to mislead us, we don’t have to worry about toxic ingredients. After all, just because a wrapper says it’s organic doesn’t take away the fact that it’s still a packaged, processed food.   And now we also know that it might not even be organic. .
What to do?

  • Join a CSA
  • Go to the farmer’s market
  • Feed your family a variety of fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts, seeds, eggs dairy and meat.
  • Involve your children in the preparation! It’s so much more interesting and exciting for your kids to crack open eggs and measure out servings of berries than it is to watch mom tear open a package of food that will still be edible this time next year.

If you think you don’t have time, make time. It’s that important.  Need shortcuts or plan ahead ideas? Ask me– I would love to help. You are building a foundation of eating habits for the rest of their lives.  Also remember that many diseases are a result of what we consume- so give your bodies what they need.  Fresh, whole, delicious food.
