Ask Holly: Coconut Water During Pregnancy?

Hi Holly-

I have been seeing coconut water in lots of stores lately and wanted to ask you- is it safe to drink during pregnancy? If so, what are the benefits of drinking coconut water? Thanks.

Hi Jessica,

Thanks for your question. It’s one I’m asked often. Yes, it is safe to drink coconut water during pregnancy, and there are many benefits. Here are the top 3, in my opinion:

  • It treats morning sickness by keeping you hydrated- coconut water is full of electrolytes and better than any “sports drink” on the market.
  • It regulates your digestive system- it’s no secret, pregnancy slows everything way down, and coconut water will keep things moving!
  • It contains lauric acid- helpful for baby’s developing brain.

Look for the brands in the aseptic tetrapaks, and drink up!

Snack Ideas for Pregnancy

Walnuts

Dried Apricots, Pineapple or Mango

Trail Mix (with chocolate chips!)

almond butter on Ezekiel toast

Whole food bars such as Vega, Larabar or Greens Plus

Also remember that anytime you have sugar, eat some fat with it to slow down the absorption rate.   Examples: full fat ice cream, butter on a muffin, peanut butter and honey on toast, you get the idea!

Daily smoothies are also a great way to get some of your required daily nutrients…click here for smoothie ideas!

In The News: Papaya for Cancer Treatment

Researchers have found that papaya leaf extract has dramatic tumor-fighting properties against breast and cervical cancer.papaya

University of Florida researcher Nam Dang along with researchers at The University of Tokyo documented papaya’s anticancer effect in a report published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology.

Dang used an extract made from dried papaya leaves, and the stronger the extract, the better the results.    This is exciting news because the papaya extract did not have any toxic effects on normal cells, avoiding a common and dangerous side effect of many cancer therapy regimens.

Dang and his colleagues in Tokyo showed that papaya leaf extract boosts the production of cytokines which help regulate the immune system.

Papaya has been used as a remedy for a variety of ailments in many parts of the world for centuries.  This study focuses on the leaves, but the fruit is delicious and full of beta carotene and digestive enzymes.  Eat it while pregnant to avoid constipation.

It also makes a great first food for babies!

Another Reason to Go Organic

Eat organically grown food for the health of your baby!  Here is an article about the presence of hazardous chemicals, including pesticides, present in umbilical cord blood.  The low level of exposure to toxins in utero is linked to birth defects, developmental disorders and chronic diseases.  Join a CSA, shop the farmer’s market, and vote with your dollar by buying organic food.
