CSA Time!

Spring is here, which means it’s time to sign-up for a CSA!  CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture, and when you sign-up to become a member of one you are paying your local farmer for a share of the farm.  It is the best of all worlds.  Your money goes straight to the people growing your food, you eat locally grown and in-season foods, and you’ll eat tons more vegetables than you ever thought possible!  It usually works something like this:  You pay upfront for the whole season so the farmer has the money he needs to grow your food.  Then once a week you’ll either go out to the farm to pick up your “share,” or you’ll pick it up at a designated drop-off location in your city.  Week after week we are amazed at the bountiful veggies in our share, and we look forward to using new recipes and getting creative with some things we’ve never even heard of!  It really adds variety to your meals, and takes the guesswork out of grocery shopping.  Ever had one of those moments when you’re standing in the produce section of the supermarket thinking, “I know we need to eat more vegetables, but what should I buy?”  Never again.  Visiting the farm is a great field trip for city dwellers, and I believe it’s really important to teach our children where their food comes from.  In fact, studies show that when children are involved in the process of growing vegetables, they eat more!

There’s something special about being able to thank the people who plant, care for, and harvest the food you put in your body.  This is in stark contrast to conventionally grown supermarket food that has been flown in from thousands of miles away and been touched by countless hands and machinery.  Also, when you break down the cost of everything you receive in your box each week, you’ll discover that belonging to a CSA is less expensive than shopping at the store.

Personalized Puzzle Stool

I was on a gift hunt for my toddler and wanted to give him something that was useful, would last, and keep his attention for more than 2 seconds.  I did lots of research and decided to get him a wooden stool with his name carved in it as a puzzle. (He’ll need it soon enough to reach the sink to wash his hands and brush his teeth!) I scoured the internet for one that was handmade in the U.S. with sustainable wood, and painted with non-toxic paint. I found the perfect stool!  It is sturdy and functional, and very beautifully handmade.

Puzzle Stool

He loves it!  He really enjoys seeing his name in letters, taking it apart, putting it back together, and most of all, climbing on it!

Everyone who has seen it has asked for information on where I bought it, so I thought I’d share with you too.  We all know someone who could use one of these.

It came from Cubby Hole Toys.  I heard from the owner that they have been making them for about 30 years now and are now doing stools for kids of kids who have them!

I’m so glad to have found such a great family owned, made in the USA, safe toy making company.

Meal Planning Made Simple

I just read a  great article about meal planning and I want to share it with all of you!  It’s from Tumblon.com– and while you’re there, check out the rest of the site…it is a great resource for parenting tips, milestones, creative play, recommended age specific products, etc., and you can track your child’s milestones, write a blog, and upload pictures to share with friends and family.  It can serve as a virtual baby book!  I look forward to my updates every week.

Don’t Let the Media Scare You

The big fertility story making the morning show rounds is the “breaking news” that women lose 90% of their eggs by the time they’re 30, and only have 3% left when they turn 40. Stories like this really rile me up, because when doctors are asked what women can do to increase their chances of fertility, one of the recommendations is to avoid stress.  Then don’t report stories like this!  First of all, if I was born with as many as 2 million eggs (it’s estimated that baby girls are born with between 1 and 2 million follicles that have the potential to mature into eggs) then having “only” 3% left when I turn 40 means I’ll still have 60,000.  More than enough potential babies, don’tcha think?  Or let’s be conservative and say i was born with 450,000 eggs.  That’s still 45,000 when i’m 30, and 13,500 when I’m 40.

I know the news media is constantly looking for things to report on, but enough with the scare tactics about fertility.  Let’s focus on what we do have control over- how you treat your body.  Sleep well, eat well, go for walks, exercise, avoid trans fats and artificial anything, cultivate your spiritual life, spend time in the moment without dwelling on the past or obsessing over the future, allow yourself to “do nothing” and enjoy it, give, look for opportunities to really love your friends and family, and enjoy every minute of it.

“We can smile, breathe, walk, and eat our meals in a way that allows us to be in touch with the abundance of happiness that is available. We are very good at preparing to live, but not very good at living. We know how to sacrifice ten years for a diploma and we are willing to work very hard to get a job, a car, a house, and so on. But we have difficulty remembering that we are alive in the present moment, the only moment there is for us to be alive.”
