Army of Women

Dr. Susan Love and Avon have teamed up on a project called Army of Women, Going Beyond a Cure.  I saw her on the Today Show this morning and she made some great points- we have spent over 4 billion dollars on breast cancer research, and still have no idea why it’s caused.  She said when she was in residency 30 years ago, if a woman had an abnormal pap smear they did an immediate hysterectomy.  Whoa- she was trying to illustrate the point that doctors don’t always know how to treat diseases they don’t understand, and she feels that breast cancer is one of them.  Dr. Love said when women are diagnosed with breast cancer, they aren’t asked any questions about environmental exposures, lifestyle, etc. and that 80% of women diagnosed with breast cancer have done everything right- they don’t smoke, don’t drink, are a healthy weight, etc.  so we’re obviously missing something, and it’s time to ask the questions.   She and Avon have set out to find the cause so we can get rid of this insidious disease.  Their goal:

  • To recruit one million healthy women of every age and ethnicity, including breast cancer survivors and women at high-risk for the disease, to partner with breast cancer researchers and directly participate in the research that will eradicate breast cancer once and for all.
  • To challenge the scientific community to expand its current focus to include breast cancer prevention research conducted on healthy women.

Join us in this movement that will take us beyond a cure by creating new opportunities to study what causes breast cancer—and how to prevent it.

I strongly encourage you to go to this website and volunteer to participate in these studies!!!  Spread the word and recruit your friends, sisters, moms, daughters, aunts, cousins- every woman you know!!!

Locally Grown Goes Virtual

Sometimes the happy chaos of the local farmer’s market is a challenge with children. This is one of many reasons you should check out locallygrown.net – it’s a virtual farmer’s market! Go to the site and search for your city- if they serve your area you go online, peruse the seasonal offerings, order, and pick up. Completely takes out the hassle of wrangling for a tomato on a hot, crowded day, or missing the best options if you’re not there when the sun comes up. If they aren’t in your hometown yet, check back often- they will be soon! It’s the wave of the farmer’s market’s future.
