Fall Is Here

Summer is officially over. While I’m sad to see it go, and will miss the beach, sunshine, ice cream and popsicles, fall is my favorite time of year.

Every year with the cool, crisp mornings and the autumn leaves I feel very nostalgic. I can’t quite put my finger on the reason, but every year it creeps up on me out of nowhere and suddenly I miss every place I’ve ever lived during this season.

I miss Southern California where even though it’s the land of eternal sunshine, every October we felt a cool breeze usher in slighty cooler temperatures. I miss the Harvest Festival we had every year, the pancake breakfasts, the hay rides, jumping in the leaves with my sisters, roasted pumpkin seeds and bobbing for apples at our neighborhood Halloween parties.

I miss my small hometown in New Mexico, the beginning of a new school year and all the excitement that came along with it, cheer leader tryouts, the annual parade and fair, Friday night football games where we drank steaming hot chocolate, the bonfires, the Snickers costume my dad made me for Halloween*, and my mom’s chicken and rice soup.

I miss Paris and Milan and warm pain chocolat, hot frothy cappuccinos, finding the American Grocery Store where I stocked up on candy corn, drinking wine with lunch lest you offend your host,  traveling every weekend by train to visit as many countries as possible, my birthday dinner atop the Eiffel Tower, Thanksgiving with my family at The Americain Cathedral in Paris and where even a day of cold dreary rain is still beautiful.

I think about New York City and the smell of chestnuts wafting from street carts, brisk walks in Central Park, hopping into a cab just to warm up, the comfort of a restaurant with a fireplace, soft rain, the beauty of the fall foliage on the Hudson River, dodging the weirdos in costumes, my first date with my husband drinking pumpkin beer and playing guitar on a clear October evening, and most of all that magical year I had a brand new baby and everything was all at once vivid and a blur.

And I think about today and the new memories we are making. I wonder if my son will feel as homesick as I do when he’s older and the leaves start to turn.

How about you? Does this time of year make you feel the same way? I’d love to hear from you.

*I’ve always loved chocolate. So much so, that I dressed up as chocolate not once, but twice for Halloween. The other time I was a package of M&Ms.

Nutrient Dense Smoothie for Toddler

My 2 year old loves popsicles, ice cream and cupcakes likes the rest of them. The thing is, I’m perfectly fine serving them to him for breakfast, lunch or dinner because they are always homemade with fruits, veggies(!), healthy fats and no added sugar.

I’m hoping this will help him develop a healthy attitude toward eating, since there are no forbidden foods and no, “eat this first, then you can have that.” This leads kids to believe that dessert is a reward for being good and eating food they don’t like, and also sets the stage for power struggles with toddlers asserting their independence.

He hasn’t reached a vegetable shunning stage yet, but I brace for it every day. In fact, yesterday I was reading in Super Baby Food that between 1 and 2 years of age is the most important time to shape your baby’s taste buds. This is the time to introduce them to a vast array of tastes, consistencies, colors and healthy foods. After their second birthdays most children are very reluctant to try anything new.

I recently read a list of the most nutrient dense foods that you should aim to give your toddler at least once a week. This morning when my son brought me a cup, a lid and a straw and asked to make a smoothie, I thought- why not try to pack as many of the foods on that list as possible!

Here’s what we put in his mid-morning snack:

1/2 cup Whole milk yogurt
1 Banana
Almond Butter (about a tablespoon)
1/4 cup frozen blueberries
2 handfuls of fresh baby spinach
coconut oil (not sure how much- i just poured a little in)
A little water to make it easier to sip
1 teaspoon brewer’s yeast

He helped me with the whole thing- he really enjoys pouring all of the ingredients in and holding the immersion blender (which I highly recommend) while I press the buttons.

It turned out great- he gave me half of it… Yum!

Next time I’ll take photos!

Tea Collection

My favorite baby and toddler clothing is from Tea Collection. Ever since I received the first kimono style onesie for my newborn, I’ve been hooked.

And the article of clothing that gets the most compliments my son wears are these very handsome pin striped pants. He wears them all the time, and they are super soft and comfortable.

Lately I’ve gotten more inquiries than normal, so I wanted to let you all know Tea Collection is offering free shipping on Thursday and Friday!

Happy Shopping!

Arnica for Bruises

I have a toddler who runs and climbs and dances and jumps and copies everything his 4 year old cousin does- which means I have a toddler with lots of bruises.

Enter Arnica Montana- a flowering plant native to the mountains of Europe and Siberia that has been used medicinally since the 1500s.

The petals and roots contain helanalin and thymol derivatives which are anti-inflammatory and have been proven more effective than ibuprofen when used topically on the skin.

Arnica also acts as a vasodilator which means the small capillaries under the skin are widened. This increased blood flow to the area aids the healing process by removing other blood and fluid accumulation- almost like an internal irrigation of the wound.

The result? Bumps and bruises vanish in no time! I always have a bottle of Arnica on me at all times. The one we use is in a base of organic olive oil, but it comes in gels, sprays and creams also. Here is the kind we use:

Just last week, that 4 year old cousin smashed her finger in the door. It immediately turned purple and looked terrible- everyone thought she would lose a fingernail. We put arnica oil on it generously, and by the next day it was looking so much better. I love it when we use a natural remedy that works and we have witnesses!

Please note: Arnica should not be used on broken skin. My favorite topical ointment for cuts and scrapes is Angel Baby Bottom Balm (I just saw that it’s on sale right now!) This is always in my diaper bag too- as it can be used as a diaper cream, or for any type of first aid.

Whew- life with a toddler is tough!

736 Days and Counting…

For those of you who over the course of the last 17 months have written to ask me how long I planned to breastfeed my son- I made it to two years!

And quite honestly, I don’t see an end in sight anytime soon.

Now my biggest hurdle is knowing what to say when friends, family, and perfect strangers ask me that question they’ve asked since he was 6 months old. I suppose since only 27% of moms are still breastfeeding past 6 months of age, it is definitely not the norm to see a mom of a toddler whip out a nursing cover during lunch at a restaurant.

But since the World Health Organization recommends breastfeeding for at least the first two years of life, I had always planned to make it this far.
