Great Website for Traveling With Kids

I am preparing for an 8 hour flight with my toddler! Sounds daunting, doesn’t it? Well it doesn’t have to- a friend recently gave me some very good advice- “have high expectations of your children.” I had actually never thought of this before, though my husband and I have always taken our son along to everything we do with high hopes that everything will turn out well. But we hadn’t actually put words to what we were doing- having high expectations of him. Well said.   And it’s applicable in any situation, whether sitting through a restaurant meal with friends, visiting an art museum, or traveling across the pacific ocean.

My sister who has lots of experience traveling with her son (his first flight to Hawaii was at 8 weeks!) told me about a great resource:

Baby Travel Made Easy

Even though my son has already traveled by plane many many times, including two 11 hour flights, I thought I’d check it out to see if there was anything I could add to my bag of tricks.

Here is my favorite tip:

“Once the flight is under way, it’s time to play Santa Claus. (Santa flies, too, right?) Every hour or so, give your little one a gift to unwrap. The presents don’t have to be fancy or expensive; they might include books, snacks, or stickers. But it’s best to give items your child has never seen before, since these will hold his interest the longest.”

I loaded up on books, stickers, cars, and Legos yesterday.  We should be fine. Oh, and I’m counting on a 3 hour nap.  Is that too much to ask?

UPDATE: ok, so I just finished wrapping all the little gifts (like I needed one more thing to do!) and I think I might have gone a little overboard:

Ask Holly: What Are the Best Kitchen Appliances?

Hi Holly! I love your website and blog. What kitchen appliances do you recommend to prepare your family’s food? I am so excited to make homemade food for our six month-old son, but I realized that our cuisinart is probably loaded with BPA. Ugh! Do you suggest the Beaba? My only problem with that is that I would like to make larger quantities and freeze some, sometimes. I would love to hear your thoughts on this! Thank you soooo much!
Separately, we just signed up for a CSA, on your recommendation. Thanks!!
Yours,

Summertime Necessities

Summer is here! Since it’s beach time again, remember to use a chemical free, mineral based sunblock for your precious baby’s skin. Here is my favorite: Badger Sunscreen SPF 30

It’s also mosquito central in these parts, so here is the best natural bug repellent I can find: Burt’s Bees Herbal Insect Repellent 4 fl oz spray

If you have a sunscreen or bug spray you already use but want to check the integrity of the ingredients,  go to the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep Database and search for your products to find out if they’re safe to use on your baby.

Most importantly, have fun in the sun!

Dr. Sunil Pai, MD

I recently had the opportunity to meet Dr. Sunil Pai,MD and tour his amazing Integrative Medicine Health and Lifestyle Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico.  Speaking with Dr. Pai reignited my passion for natural healing and reminded me why I started working as a health counselor.

Dr. Pai adheres to the precept of medical ethics, “first, do no harm,” and treats the whole person using the modality best suited for that individual.  He is very passionate about Integrative Medicine and the need for change within our current health care system and truly lives out Gandhi’s famous quote, “Be the change you wish to see in the world.”

If you are anywhere near Albuquerque I strongly encourage a visit to Dr. Pai (though he is worth traveling to if you are not!).  During our conversation he touched on many health issues facing children today from ADHD and allergies to obesity and vaccine safety and we discussed the integrative way he treats them.

Stay tuned for an interview with Dr. Pai on this site, as well as links to his recommendations for supporting our children’s immune systems.

My Favorite Way to Reduce Stress

I’m in New Mexico for my nephew’s highschool graduation and the thought that keeps going through my head is “time goes by so fast.” Wasn’t it only a few weeks ago that I was holding him as a brand new baby? Yet here I sit- 18 years, 4 nieces, 1 nephew and one child of my own later…yes, time flies by. It has so far in the life of my toddler and I need these reminders to live in the present and enjoy the moment.

My son is now peacefully napping in my arms, and even though people often ask me how I ever get anything done, I know how quickly this phase will pass. I wouldn’t trade this time for anything in the world. I know I can’t do anything about the speed of life, but for now I’m going to hold my baby, not make excuses about it, and enjoy every second of it.
