They make a mess, but contain no wheat, soy, dairy or refined sugar. I decided to hold off on giving one to my baby until I needed something to occupy his attention for a very long time. When, you ask? An 11 hour flight! Just as I suspected, he loved it, practiced his self feeding, and worked his jaw. Enter the messy period of baby feeding. We welcome you with open arms.

Water, Water Everywhere
All this rain in NYC is making me think about one of my favorite health tips- one that can cure a variety of ailments from morning sickness to headaches to kidney stones- the list goes on. Drink more water!
However, now that we know about the danger of Bisphenol-A, which is linked to birth defects, breast cancer and obesity amongst other things, many people are confused about plastic bottles. Solution? Continue reading Water, Water Everywhere
Don’t Underestimate What Your Baby Will Eat!
I am so surprised by some of the flavors and tastes my baby likes. Raw turnips? Have you ever tried them? Hummus with tons of raw garlic? Straight tahini? I marvel when he opens his mouth for more. The key now is to try to continue with this exploratory mode he’s in and not fall into a rut of “easy” things to serve. Peeling a banana is so much easier than steaming or sauteeing fresh fruits and veggies, but I don’t want to miss this “excited about flavors and new foods” window so I’m trying to think beyond my idea of normal too. I would have never thought to eat a turnip raw, or a turnip at all for that matter. But since a farmer at last weekend’s market handed my husband a raw turnip, my son quickly opened his mouth for a taste. He loved it, so steamed turnips are on the menu this week! The average American eats 4 different types of vegetables and I don’t even want to tell you that two of them are potatoes and tomatoes- yes, you guessed it, fries and ketchup. There are hundreds of different types and varieties in the world so we need to expand our vegetable repertoire. Continue reading Don’t Underestimate What Your Baby Will Eat!
Is You Baby Getting Enough Iron?
If he’s shunning the taste of iron fortified food, or in my case babyfood all together, here’s an easy solution:
Cook in cast iron pots and pans! They don’t contain the toxic ingredients of non-stick pans, and will impart some iron right into the food. The company I like best is Lodge Cast Iron, and not just because it’s from Tennessee. It is family owned and operated and has been for over 100 years, and is a green company- recycling cardboard, reusing foundry sand, and planting trees. I love eco-responsibility!
When you’re postpartum and in need of extra iron yourself, have someone cook for you in cast iron. It’s great for breastfeeding moms too- We’ll take extra nutrients wherever we can get ’em.
Here’s a recipe the whole family can enjoy (even your older baby!): Continue reading Is You Baby Getting Enough Iron?
Cheers for Oatios
I’ve been trying to find the perfect finger food to help my baby develop his pincer grasp. Everything I tried- banana, cucumber strips, scrambled egg yolk, grated carrot, halved grapes and blueberries, the list goes on- seemed more frustrating than helpful. It was so slippery he couldn’t get his fingers around the pieces, and I realized while trying to clean off his highchair that I couldn’t even pick any of the pieces up, and I’ve been using my pincers for decades! Of course I am of the “avoid packaged food” mindset, but here’s where being integrative comes in. Continue reading Cheers for Oatios
