Water

Drink more water! Unless your drinking at least 8 glasses a day (more if your pregnant, breastfeeding or exercise frequently), you’re not drinking enough. Better yet, I recommend drinking 1/2 your body weight in ounces, so if you weigh 130 pounds, drink 65 ounces of water. Almost all health problems from infertility (because of hormone imbalance) to high cholesterol to cancer can benefit from this simple step. When you opt for water, chances are you’re replacing sugary drinks, artificially sweetened soft drinks, or caffeinated beverages- all detrimental to your health. Your body is 65% water, and your brain is 85% water and water is needed for every bodily function. Here’s a fact that should make you reach for a glass: Continue reading Water

Trying to lose the baby weight?

Eat breakfast! Time and time again it has been proven that breakfast is indeed the most important meal of the day.  If you are struggling to get those last 10 pounds of baby weight off, you will be surprised at how such a seemingly easy thing to do will help you lose weight.  Most people either don’t believe it will help, or feel they don’t have the time.  This is one area where I am pretty strict: make time to prepare and eat a nutritious breakfast!  This is essential for every person all the time, so remind your friends and family.  If you are breastfeeding, this is so important for your milk supply after “fasting” all night.  So I say, if losing weight isn’t enough motivation, do it for the health of your baby.  If you don’t eat, you’re body will go into starvation mode and hang on to every excess pound for dear life.  No amount of “cardio” later in the day can help correct this mistake.  Here are some good options: Continue reading Trying to lose the baby weight?

Antidepressants..not en Vogue

I just read a great article on the danger of taking antidepressants during pregnancy.  The biggest surprise about the article?  I found it in Vogue magazine!  I know you must be thinking “how on earth does a new mom have time to read a fashion magazine,” and I’m with you on that one.  Can’t believe I actually read it cover to cover!  It’s all part of being an Integrative Mom I suppose.  I was excited to see truth being told about the “mal” practices of the pharmaceutical companies in the most unlikely of places.  I was upset to read that, “A recent study in the New England Journal of Medicine found that drug companies publish only two thirds of antidepressant studies- usually the most positive ones.”  Risks of taking antidepressants during pregnancy include miscarriage, premature birth, birth defects, heart abnormalities, and trouble breathing.  Click here to see for yourself > Vogue Article
