Roomba!

Santa brought me the best Christmas present ever this year.  Seriously- I have told anyone who will listen about this thing.  I haven’t been this excited about a Santa gift since I got my first Cabbage Patch Kid.  Does that get my point across?

I got a Roomba!  If you’ve seen these in the stores and wondered if they work, I am here to tell you that not only do they work, but they are awesome!  The first time I ran mine, I had mopped and vacuumed the floor about 3 days earlier.  When the cleaning cycle was over, I was shocked at how full the dust tray was!  Shocked, but also very happy that this device picks up every speck of microscopic dust in is path.  It goes around table legs, onto carpet from wood floors and vice versa, under sofas, and in and out of all the rooms.  All with the push of a button.  As we all know, life with children can make for some very dirty floors.  Now my floor is always crumb free.  I wish I had this when my son was 6 weeks old and the only thing that would soothe him was the sound of the vacuum cleaner.  As I sat bouncing him on the stability ball, with the vacuum buzzing loudly next to us, I often thought to myself, “too bad it’s just sitting there and not actually vacuuming my floors!”  If I’d had the Roomba then, I’d be multitasking like crazy!  Now the only issue I have is that my toddler is scared to death of it.  He thinks it’s an alien invasion or something- I’m not sure, but he is definitely suspect.  No problem though- I run it when we go to bed at night, or while we’re out, and I come home to fresh, spotless floors.

I think every mom needs one.

Plum Organics

I recently contacted Plum Organics and asked them to send me a sample of their products to test out and review. It’s such a small world- turns out I know the head of PR and marketing from school! Anyway, she sent me a sample of the fiddlesticks, babyfood pouches, and the fruity fingerfuls. I might have the only child on the planet who doesn’t like to eat “puffs” and most other convenience food, so I wasn’t sure what he would do when I let him try these new snacks.
The fingerfuls are freeze dried fruits and grain bits- and he loves them! The strawberry is his favorite flavor, and he feels so “big” and proud of himself when he opens the bag, pulls out a snack, and happily crunches away. The fiddlesticks are yummy too- and once again, they are discerning baby approved. These gluten free sticks are easy to hold, dissolve quickly, and are a little on the sweeter side, so they make a great healthy organic treat.
The baby food pouches are truly a godsend. My baby, who has never had the biggest appetite and usually takes 3 bites of food before he’s done (picture all of the open, half eaten jars of babyfood I would have in my fridge if I didn’t make most of it myself!) quickly flattened the first flavor and then motioned for the second. I will be ordering these by the case. They are great for car rides, or any other on-the-go activity.
The best part about them is that I can confidently give any one of the snack options to my child, because the quality of the ingredients and integrity of the company is top notch.
Thank you Plum Organics!

Earth Mama, Angel Baby

Earth Mama Angel Baby - Pregnancy
Congrats to this great company who earned a hazard score of ZERO on the Environmental Working Group’s skin deep database.  Nothing toxic or questionable was found in the ingredients of their products!  I LOVE the booby tubes (to prevent clogged ducts and mastitis), the Baby Bottom Balm, and the Nipple Butter (it has a fabulous smell I will always associate with those middle of the night feedings in the early weeks of a new baby.)

Starbucks To the Rescue!

What’s a mom to do? You’re dying for your green tea latte or caramel macchiato, but you know everytime you step foot in Starbucks your baby points at all of the sugary baked goods and then looks into your eyes pleadingly…you want to give in, but can’t bear the thought of feeding those to your child and ruining his tastes buds for natural sweetness forever. (What? This has never happened to you? It will!) Well I have great news- you no longer have to fret, feel guilty, or give up your fix. Starbucks has recently started carrying Peter Rabbit Organics Mango, Banana and Orange Pure Fruit Snack Pouches) and your baby will LOVE them! You just twist off the top, and they happily start slurping away with delight. On a recent trip to Roswell, NM, where it’s hard to find organic healthy snacks I discovered them, so I promptly bought their whole inventory. This is something to keep in mind when traveling, especially to small towns. THANK YOU STARBUCKS!

Beat the Winter Skin Blues

For years I searched for the answer to my skin breakouts, and since I believed dermatologists and beauty magazines assertions that “what you eat has nothing to do with your skin” I tried anything and everything. Seriously: extremely harsh prescriptions, antibiotics (needed to be taken for life), crazy 3 step skin care regimens, peels, scrubs, new pillowcases every night, you name it, I tried it- unless it was diet related. Then I found Dr. Nicholas Perricone and the wisdom he had to offer! Here was a dermatologist on the Upper East Side of Manhattan saying that what you put in your body has everything to do with the health of your skin! Of course since then most people have wisened up and recommend eating cleaner for healthier skin, but Dr. Perricone gives us exact foods to eat and recommendations for clear, vibrant, radiant skin.
It was in his book The Perricone Prescription that I happened on a little factoid that changed my life- dairy may cause breakouts. What? Why had I never heard of this? Sure enough, I removed dairy from my diet and within a week my skin started clearing up completely. If only I had known this while I was modeling full time, it would have saved me from many worried filled nights before big photo-shoots! (I painfully remember showing up to film an Oxy commercial with the biggest zit I’d ever had. Everyone on set was laughing at the irony…must have been that Ben & Jerry’s I was somewhat addicted to!) These days of motherhood I have a lot less time to spend on my skin care routine (and by less time I mean sometimes i wear the same make up for a week. You know it’s true…) The beauty of taking care of your skin from the inside out is that you don’t have to add any steps to your already crazy life! You eat no matter what!

Oh- and now I get to decide what I’d rather have: clear skin, or a latte. And yes, sometimes I choose the latte. As I said in my Oxy commercial many years ago, “It’s called balance.”
