The Breast Crawl

Have you ever heard of it? I first read about “the breast crawl” in Dr. Greene’s bookFrom First Kicks to First Steps.  I was so intrigued!

Basically, even though babies don’t have much strength in their legs when they are born, if placed on the mother’s abdomen immediately after birth they will use the smell of the amniotic fluid on their hands to guide them to the nipples (which have a similar scent) as they use their little legs and feet to crawl to the breast!

World Breastfeeding Week

Every day this week is dedicated to mama’s milk.

If you are currently breastfeeding a newborn, hang in there! It will get easier!

If you are currently breastfeeding a baby 6-12 months, congratulations on making it this far!

If you are breastfeeding a toddler, I’d love to hear from you! How is it going? What are the challenges you are currently facing? Do you have any words of wisdom to share?

My 22 month old son now politely asked for the “nurse cover” when we are out in public. The first time he did that my heart melted. I love how patiently he waits as I dig around in my bag for it.

If you are breastfeeding now (or will be soon) I highly recommend the Breastfeeding Support Kit by Earth Mama Angel Baby.

I had mastitis a total of 5 times, and I couldn’t have lived without the Booby Tubes.  The Nipple Butter was a miracle worker those first few painful weeks- I had a jar by my bed, the couch and the shower at all times. The tea is also good- not overpowering like some of the others out there.

Keep up the good work mamas!

Drowning in Bags

Every time I open my coat closet door, I am attacked by bags- you know, the ones we are supposed to take with us when we shop. Today during nap time I decided to do something about it. After all, if I’m going to help the environment I should also clean up mine.

Time to organize!

As I pulled them out of the closet, I envisioned a clown car or Mary Poppins purse as more and more and more came tumbling out.  I couldn’t believe the collection we’d gathered, so I counted them. Continue reading Drowning in Bags

Banana “Ice Cream”

Remember how I told you a few days ago that I have created an Ice Cream Monster? Yes, one trip to the ice cream shop was enough for him to chant “Ice Keem, Ice Keem, Ice Keem,” over and over and over for weeks. In fact, he woke up from his nap yesterday, took one look at me, and said, “ice keem?”

He’d finally eaten the last peach popsicle out of the freezer (they contained peaches, coconut milk, a banana and a little vanilla extract and were SO good! To date, they are the first thing my son has eaten that he wouldn’t share a single bite of. In fact, he cried hysterically when his daddy took a lick-the only time he’s EVER done this!)

So I had to think of something quick…

Here’s what I came up with:

  • 1 frozen banana blended with
  • milk to desired thickness (cow, goat, coconut, almond, or rice milk all work fine)
  • 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla
  • dash of cinnamon and…

Voila!

Banana Ice Keem!!!

He LOVED it, and I was surprised at how much it really tasted like ice cream. His daddy came home and saw what we were up to- but this time he was smart…he didn’t dare risk taking a bite of the ice cream monster’s. Instead, he added some frozen blueberries to my recipe and enjoyed purple ice keem.

It was a great afternoon for all.
